Why do I Relay? My reasons are different than most. I think that
most Relay for the Cancer Survivor, the one living with the cancer,
but I believe that most cancer survivors have come to terms with
their cancer and move forward in life and try and enjoy the years
that they have left. Why do I Relay? I relay for the caregiver, family
members and other loved ones. In my case I believe that my family
and friends worry more than I do. I saw my mother cry three times in
my life and two of the times was because of my cancer. Many times
your friends and family feel helpless; I know that my Mother felt that
way. My Mother passed away about ten days after I was released
from the hospital after receiving my stem cell transplant. She would
have enjoyed Relay and I know that she would be proud of me for
the way I am dealing with my cancer. This April will mark year “5” of
being without my Mother. My first year to Relay I saw all these
people coming together to celebrate, to celebrate life. The majority
are not cancer survivors, they are friends and family. They want to
get involved, they want to make a difference. Relay is about getting
people involved. I don’t want my friends and family members to feel
helpless. I want my friends and family members to experience the
peace that I have.
